FW: More News from the Underground! Message-ID: Hello Neighbors! News and Updates from the Underground! The Fleetwood Unofficial Business Directory is undergoing final revisions, and (hopefully) will be sent to the printer tomorrow! We are hopeful that copies will be made in time for the meeting on Thursday! Get yours while it is still hot off the press! Don't forget to take a ride on the "FoodTown Ferry"! Shuttle Buses provided by the City of Mount Vernon depart from the A&P parking lot to FoodTown every Wednesday and Friday from 10am - 12pm, leaving on the half hour. I hear from Pat and Teppie that it's a fun ride to and from the store, and shopping for groceries is ALWAYS more fun when you go with a friend! Hop on and Shop on! The City of Mount Vernon is pleased to announce that a new technology called "Shot Spotter" will be installed in our city. Officials in Mount Vernon and Yonkers are hoping that $3 million worth of sophisticated sound and video technology provided by Westchester County will help cops use the sound of gunfire to their advantage. County Executive Andy Spano today announced that the county will buy and install a network of sound sensors in both cities that can detect gunfire, pinpoint its location and relay the information to police within seconds. The gunshot detection technology alerts police almost immediately that shots have been fired and where. Once the sound is picked up by the sensors, a video camera automatically activates and focuses on the area it came from. The information is immediately transmitted to police headquarters, allowing cops to respond quickly to gunshot incidents. _____ Meetings * Next Meeting! Thursday, March 19, 7:30, Riverside Memorial Chapel. I've attached the flyer to this email - please print it out and give it to a neighbor, or post it in your buildings...We have a lot on the agenda, so come early and get a great seat! * Speaking of the agenda...Jeff Williams from the Planning Department will be on hand to discuss the Mount Vernon Comprehensive Plan. He has specially extended the deadline for Community Surveys to accommodate this meeting, and for that, we thank him! If you haven't submitted your survey yet, do it now! You can do it online at www.planmv.com; or pick one up at your local elementary school or city hall. The survey is a great way for you to express your vision and hopes for Mount Vernon! * Mary Harris, Relay for Life, will be discussing the exciting activities and events planned around this very important fundraiser. Last year, Mount Vernon raised a record amount of funds and had a record amount of FUN at the Relay for Life! Hear how you can participate, host your own team, or join a team! * Abby G. Peretz of Sunrise Assisted Living will be coming to talk about the many programs and services offered at their facility on Columbus Avenue. * Annual Talkin' Trash and Spring Planting event is on May 15, 2009 from 8:30a - 3p. Help us beautify the neighborhood and welcome spring in big style! Events Planning is under way for the Annual Talkin' Trash Spring Planting event, scheduled for May 15, 2009. Volunteers are needed and adored for this transforming event! There is no better way to give back to our community in spring than to get dirty! Instant gratification awaits those who participate! Participants should meet at the Fleetwood Deli-Cafe starting at 8:30 am. We will plant all day, usually finishing by around 3:00 pm. (Just in time to pick the kids up from school!) Then after we clean up, we head to a local watering hole to nurse our calluses and congratulate ourselves on a job well done! Only have an hour to spare? That's no problem! Even an hour is a huge help to the cause, and it really does create a welcoming environment for everyone. Teppie Lampros is looking for signs to lace in the tree wells to remind our community who does all the hard work, and we are asking all dog owners to curb their pets while the flowers are in the wells - it is truly discouraging to watch a canine pee all over our hard work. Free Ice Skating at the Ice Hutch! Every Saturday, from 1:00 PM - 3:30 PM, the City of Mount Vernon Recreation Department hosts a Family Skating Program! The Ice Hutch is located right behind Target across from the Animal Shelter. Take the family - lessons are only $20.00, including skate rental! You must register - so call Mount Vernon Recreation at 914-665-2420 to sign up! See you all there next week! (Please note, children under 4 must wear a helmet - a bike helmet is sufficient.) Bookmobile Spring Schedule! The Mount Vernon Public Library is bringing the books to you! The Bookmobile enables patrons to pick up library cards, surf the net (and check out the website www.fleetwoodneighbors.org) put selections on hold, reserve DVDs, Audiobooks, CDs, and vacation loans. In fact, the list is ENDLESS! Meet the Bookmobile at the following locations and dates: Sunrise Senior Living (500 Columbus Avenue) from 10 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. Wartburg Home for the Aged (300 Bradley Avenue) from 11:45 a.m. - 12:45 p.m. A&P Parking Lot (Fleetwood) 1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. * March 18 * April 8 * April 29 * May 20 * June 10 Membership Bob would like to remind EVERYONE that membership dues are well, due! The FNA has moved a calendar year program, so everyone becomes due in January of each new year. There are, of course, exceptions to every rule. Anyone who signed up for the FNA in September 2008 or later has valid membership until December 31, 2009. Just a reminder that Individual dues are $25.00, Family is $40.00 and Business is $50.00. You may be asking yourself - why join? I get these lovely newsletters for FREE! There are MANY reasons to join the FNA, and I'm not just talking tax write-off. * FNA Membership Discount * As a member of the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association, you are privy to exclusive discounts at select Fleetwood merchants who display our sign. This includes 10% off at select stores and delis, as well as free drinks, etc. If you shop in Fleetwood, you'll more than make back your membership dues within two months. * Raise your voice! * One of our missions is to increase communication between the city and our community. By presenting large official membership rolls, we are able to create greater pressure on the powers that be and therefore have more presence where and when needed. * Help us Help YOU! * Even though our membership fees are small, they add up to a lot of benefits. For example, the FNA pays for and plants the flowers you see in the business district each spring. The FNA paid for the rocks that go around the tree wells to keep the dirt in the right place. The FNA puts together amazing events for the whole family right here in Fleetwood, but we can't do it without the support - fiscal and otherwise - of our community. * FNA Re-useable Grocery Bag! * When you join the FNA (or re-join) you get a wonderful, useful, ecologically responsible "GO BAG". This amazing bag has 101 uses, from ferrying groceries to toting library books. Carrying lunch for the family to the zoo, toys to a meeting, papers for work, or just to carry around because it's beautiful! Best of all, it folds flat for easy storage! Already have one? Let me know how you use it, so I can flesh out the list of amazing uses...! If you are unsure of your current status with the FNA, please feel free to call Bob at 914-668-9514 or email him at bob at fleetwoodneighbors.org and he will be happy to assist you! _____ Thanks to everyone for helping the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association continue to succeed and thrive! State of the City Address Message-ID: Dear Neighbors, We had a great turnout for our meeting last week, though it was disappointing to see everyone leaving as the other speakers were getting ready to inform us! The Planning Department has extended the deadline for community surveys until April 30, 2009. If you haven't done so already, please visit www.planmv.com to fill out a survey and be a part of the Comprehensive Plan process. A number of issues were addressed at this meeting, and Mr. Williams suggested we plan a "Field Walk" with the commissioners of city hall, so that they can really see what we are talking about (Foreclosed Homes in Disrepair, dangerous intersections, broken sidewalks, the parking garage, etc.) Just to recap, H&R Block is ready and willing to do your taxes! They offer many deals and discounts, and will donate $25.00 to the Fleetwood Neighborhood Association for every member that files their taxes with them. So go file your taxes! It's good for your community! Sunrise Senior Living offers a number of programs, residence options, and more for the community. They are located on No. Columbus Avenue, just at California Road, sharing grounds with the Sinai Free Synagogue. Stop by there, and ask for Abby Peretz. She will be happy to give you a tour and show you what amazing things are going on. Finally, the Mount Vernon Relay for Life is on June 12-13, 2009 at Memorial Field. There are a number of exciting activities planned surrounding this event. Susan is looking to field a FNA team! If you're interested, please email her at susan at fleetwoodneighbors.org. If we get at least 15 people, we'll go for it! I have received notification that the State of the City Address will take place on Wednesday, March 25, at 7:00 p.m. at City Council Chambers. I hope a number of you can make it there! I can't make it, so if anyone attends, will you email me notes/highlights so I can help spread the word? Thanks!! Check out our website www.fleetwoodneighbors.org for a number of exciting events and programs that are going on in the coming months! Spring is here, folks, and we are ALL springing into action! Calling all Scrapbookers! I have found about 10 years worth of memorabilia for the FNA - I would love to have it in a scrapbook and bring it to our events...but alas - my crafting skills are nil! Anyone interested in taking on the project? Supplies will be paid for by the FNA! I know you're out there, closet Martha Stewarts!! Take care!
